A Dangerous Dress

by Julia Holden

I’m Kim Alexander and this is a Fiction Nation minute. The book is A Dangerous Dress by Julia Holden.

Every girl knows you are what you wear. People will treat you differently if you’re sporting a cashmere twin set as opposed to say a rhinestone spattered belly shirt and stripper heels. (not necessarily better, just different.) The heroine of A Dangerous Dress, Jane Stuart, is killing time in her home town when she inherits the dangerous dress of the title from her grandmother. She ends up following the gorgeous garment from Indiana to Paris, gets into and out of the movie business, a disastrous stint at Fox News, two affairs, and a retail gig at Armani. Along the way, of course, Jane does what her grandmother intended for her, finding confidence and love, and that the power of the dress comes from the person wearing it. This book is a sweet, contemporary fairy tale about following your dreams, standing up for what you believe, and the power of clothes. We follow Jane Stuart, an expert in vintage clothing but a novice at life in the wide world, from her tiny home town in Indiana to the city of fabulous clothes — that’s Paris, by the way — as she struggles to hang on to her integrity and find the perfect dress. It’s not for her, it’s for a world class nasty French actress, and without just the right dress, ze film, she will not be made. Pressure’s on, Jane. A Dangerous Dress is full of coincidences, misunderstandings, broken hearts and unpaid bar bills, and of course, lots of glamorous outfits. Take this one to the pool and imagine you’re wearing a size zero Armani.  A Dangerous Dress by Julia Holden. I’m Kim Alexander and this is Fiction Nation on Book Radio, SiriusXM Channel 80.

The book is A Dangerous Dress by first time author Julia Holden. In the style of so many fairy tales, this book has an unappreciated princess — Jane Stuart — and a magical object, her grandmother’s gorgeous flapper dress. There is a quest — off to Paris to find just the right dress for a nasty French actress — the evil queen, I guess — so a movie can be finished, the script written by the handsome prince. Although I found the prince’s behavior to be a little less than royal, he ultimately has the chance to redeem himself. A Dangerous Dress is a fun and fast paced novel, written in short energetic bursts; it hums along like a pop song. The Paris locations — restaurants and fashion shows, clothing stores and sidewalks, were appropriately romantic, but like all good fairy tales, in the end the heroine must decide if there is in fact, no place like home.
