Now, you might be thinking, oh, a celebrity who wrote a book! I hope it’s as good as that Nicole Richie opus. Well, knock it off. See, I feel a little protective. I’ve not actually known Harley Jane my whole life, but after growing up watching Guiding Light every single day, I feel like we’re old friends — excuse me, friends who’ve known each other a long time.  She’s had a really enviable career path, going from the soaps to films like Arachnophobia and something called Titanic, and just at the right time segued into a successful career as a mystery novelist. She also found time to get married and have a bunch of gorgeous blonde children. Her book, Dating is Murder, despite the occasional grisly murder scene, seems to reflect her good nature through her heroine, 6-foot tall greeting card artist Wollie Shelly. Wollie is singularly unqualified to be solving murders, but things happen and Wollie has to put down her paintbrush and save the day. Harley and I spoke about frogs, the French Revolution, and she name drops like crazy, for which I am grateful.

Harley Jane Kozak — yes, the actress from Arachnophobia, has a mystery series featuring 6-foot tall greeting card artist Wollie Shelly. Wollie’s also reluctantly involved in a new reality TV show, Biological Clock, which is as hilarious and demeaning as it sounds. When one of the contestants asks her if her children will be Catholic, she admits as a child she was only in it for the stained glass. Cut! When her friend, a young au pair named Annika, vanishes, it seems like Wollie is the only one who wants her found. Plus, she’s being followed by the world’s least competent but most handsome stalker. In Dating is Murder the stakes get higher as Wollie and her friends try to keep this ridiculous TV show rolling and find out what happened to Annika. Kozak knows the ins and outs of putting together a TV show, and she’s created a fine artist and sleuth in Wolley. Dating is Murder by Harley Jane Kozak. Did you know she was in Titanic? She’s also a writer, and this is the second in her series featuring artist and accidental detective Wollie Shelly. I was prepared to race through yet another girl sleuth book, but I was pleasantly surprised by Kozac’s writing. The mystery is interesting, but what I really liked was the super low budget reality TV show Wollie is a contestant on — Biological Clock, where the audience at home votes on who gets to be parents. I got the idea Kozak has been around a set or two, and it’s the opposite of glam. In Dating is Murder,  Kozac gives Wollie a superbly bizarre family — her mother drops in from the ashram, her uncle is an unrepentant Red, and I liked the slow moving romance with her stalker. Okay, he’s obviously not really a stalker, that would be too weird. But he’s following her for a very good reason, as you will see. Dating is Muder by Harley Jane Kozac. Even though there’s a fairly grisly mystery for our heroine, Wollie Shelly to solve, the  heart of this fun-to-read novel is her life and times as she struggles to make it as a greeting card artist in Los Angeles. As my grandmother once said ‘from this you can make a living?’ Not really, so Wollie submits herself to the indignities of reality TV, in a bargain basement sleaze fest production called Biological Clock. It’s such an appalling idea, look for it next season. Dating is Murder also features Wollie’s highly peculiar family, the most awkward Thanksgiving brunch ever, featuring day-old Kaiser rolls and a bag of pot, and a rather sweet romance which I won’t spoil for you. And she solves the mystery, as if there was any question. Dating is Murder by Harley Jane Kozak. I’m Kim Alexander on Fiction Nation, Book Radio, SiriusXM Channel 80.
