How to Sleep with a Movie Star

by Kristen Harmel

I’m Kim Alexander and this is a Fiction Nation minute. I get this book, and it’s called How to Sleep With a Movie Star, and I’m all, “finally, practical advice we can really use!” Sadly, it’s not a how-to: it’s a novel by Kristen Harmel. Happily, it’s really funny and cute, and if it was July, I’d be reading it by the pool. The heroine, Claire, writes fluffy articles and celebrity interviews for Mod magazine. Her boss is a lunatic, her co-workers look down their size 2 noses at her, and her boyfriend the novelist is not exactly coming through in the boyfriend or novelist departments. Enter the movie star, Cole Brannon. Is he rich, sexy, charming, adorable, and instantly smitten with Claire? Will a thousand things get in the way of romance? And will Claire have her revenge on her tall, skinny arch mortal enemies? In How to Sleep with a Movie Star, the pleasure comes in watching Claire get into and finally out of her own way. This sweet and funny story is set at New York fashion magazine, where our narrator Claire toils over articles like ‘Ten Reasons to have a One Night Stand.’ Between writing advice like that and her tall, thin and vicious coworkers, it’s no wonder Claire is feeling down and dumpy. When she interviews the too-good-to-be-for-real movie star Cole Bannon, and he acts all interested, she chalks it up to ‘he feels sorry for me.’ I thought that was ridiculous until I remembered being 26 and saying that exact same thing. So this is a pretty lightweight book, lots of name dropping and fashion, but Claire’s road to self esteem felt pretty honest to me. How to Sleep with a Movie Star has a great big fairy tale ending, with the sweetness and light nicely balanced by Claire getting some well deserved revenge on her workplace tormenters. This funny and good-hearted book is set at the cutthroat world of a New York fashion magazine, where Claire got successful fast and made some enemies on the way up. Claire’s live-in boyfriend is turning out to be a little bit of a parasite, and her boss is clearly insane. She’s ready for some changes.  Then she interviews the movie star of the title, Cole Bannon, who is way too good to be true.  This whole book is over the top that way, though. The villains in How to Sleep with a Movie Star are irredeemably evil (like Darth Vader in Jimmy Choos),  friends are true blue, the fashions are fabulous, and everyone, good and bad, get what they deserve at the end.  The book is How to Sleep with a Movie Star by Kristen Harmel.
