You know how much I love books that take me to new and exotic places, and this qualifies in a big way — well-to-do stay at home mother of two young children. Jennifer Bradley is our narrator; she’s charming and witty, but deeply conflicted about her fairly new role, her loss of a paycheck, her lack of adult friends, and her inability to get the Cheerios out of the carpet. Her husband’s business trips are getting longer, and she’s getting angry, until she starts to wonder whether she even has that right. I found What Do You Do All Day? not only clever and well written, but extremely thought provoking and even timely. Finding out what you are worth is always a good way to spend the day. Jennifer Bradley has it all — two beautiful young children, a great husband, a beautiful apartment in New York — so why is she climbing the walls? Maybe it’s the increasingly critical eye of her mother-in-law, of trying to keep up with her daughter’s terribly sophisticated four year old girlfriends — tea parties are so last year — or the fact that her husband’s business trips are getting longer and longer, and then look who shows up — her first love, the Adult Child Actor. What Do You Do All Day? is a witty and funny book about some very serious topics — the value of raising children as opposed to getting a paycheck, and what you are worth based on what you do. No one asks that question if you bring home a paycheck, but in this novel we see how big the leap is from leaving the working world to working your butt off at home. Jennifer is a New Yorker with two young children. Quitting her fairly glamorous auction house job to raise them seemed like a good idea, but like many of us, Jennifer can’t seem to figure out who she is without a career. She has to ask her husband for money, and he’s been on the road an awful lot lately, she hasn’t been to the bathroom by herself in 4 years, her mother-in-law thinks her husband could have done better — yes, Jennifer is having a little bit of a crisis. What Do You Do All Day? is a very witty book that asks some very important questions, and I loved how the author doesn’t take sides, instead trying to find the common ground.
