How much love is too much? Are you supposed to love your children beyond good and bad, past death, above all things, regardless of the consequences? Hidden in the title of this book is the trap Jenna’s parents fall into when they find they cannot, will not let her go, despite circumstances, law and morality. They have the means to salvage their daughter, and so they do. But what happens to this child who is now venerated, worshiped, adored beyond reason? What’s her life like? This is a fascinating book, quiet and meditative, written from the point of view of a teen who wakes up from a coma with no memory of her life, her parents, who she was or where she is. All she knows is that the person she used to be was so very special — how can she live up to that? And of course there’s a good chance the new Jenna won’t care much for the one who is no longer around. As Jenna slowly finds her words and her feet, we learn about this near future world, where science has outpaced conscience, and morality and law have intertwined. It may be possible to rebuild a person, but how much of a person do you need to have on the table to start with? And the question that I kept asking, what do you have when the pieces don’t quite fit? Is it the same person, or someone entirely new? More questions than answers here, along with some elegant writing and a very nice Surprise Ending.<\/p>\n
Mary E. Pearson has written an extremely thoughtful novel for young adults, asking them to think about identity, loss, faith and letting go.<\/p>\n
